Director of Public Safety - Unity College

Job Description:
The Director of Public Safety is responsible for the safety of all Unity College students, employees and property. A middle management position, the Director of public Safety is in charge of overseeing the day to day operations of the department while ensuring that all policies, procedures, controls and reporting regulations are complied with at all times. The Director of Public Safety works closely with Student Success to ensure Public Safety is fully integrated into programmatic initiatives for the flagship campus. Specific duties include (but are not all inclusive):
Plans, monitors, and evaluates activities of the public safety department to ensure the safety of all company assets, employees, students, and guests.
Assists in developing the annual operating budget and makes recommendations for budget increases and reductions. monitors and ensures compliance of the budget.
Directly supervise employees in the public safety department, including work-study students. Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organizations policies and applicable laws. This will involve occasionally working on all shifts in order to assess and coach employees.
Ensures campus fire alarm and life safety systems are monitored to include inspections and documentation.
Serve on the Emergency Response team and is responsible for coordinating and planning emergency drills in conjunction with the Emergency Response team.
Identifies, investigates, and resolves security breaches.
Ensures response to all campus emergencies including bomb threats, fire alarms, etc.
Models and ensures appropriate workplace behavior and appearance of the department that reflects the values of Unity College.
Reviews employee related issues and ensures department and employee policies and procedures are appropriately carried out; participates in recruitment and selection of new employees.
Completes evaluations of all public safety staff.
Coordinates with local law enforcement as necessary. Maintains good working relationships with local law enforcement.
Develops and recommends new and revised policies, procedures, and methods related to campus operations.
Continuously assesses the overall effectiveness of the public safety department and facilitates training as necessary.
Network with Public Safety Officers from similar campuses.
Work closely with Student Success staff to ensure the safety of our students at all times.
Develop student educational opportunities around campus and student safety.
Serves as a role model for the College's standards of conduct and ensures public safety officers do the same.
Demonstrates a high degree of commitment to customer service and student success.
The ideal candidate will have a Bachelor's degree with at least 3-5 years of job-related experience or equivalent experience/education combined. Master's Degree preferred. Other requirements are:
Minimum of 2 years' experience in a supervisory position in a related field. Experience in safety and security in higher education is a plus.
Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations.
Ability to write reports, business correspondence, policies, and procedure manuals.
Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from students, parents, managers, and the general public.
Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists.
Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
Knowledge of principles and processes for providing excellent customer service to all campus employees, students, and visitors.
Ability to evaluate situations and incidents and choose the most appropriate course of action to ensure the safety of students, and visitors.
Must have a valid driver's license with a good driving record.
Ability and willingness to work with students from diverse political/socioeconomic backgrounds and a wide range of physical and academic abilities.
Good skills in word processing, spreadsheets, and computerized database systems.
Personal commitment to the environmental focus of the college.
Additional Information:
This is a full-time, calendar-year, exempt position working primarily day shift with weekends and/or extended hours. Must be flexible and cooperative in fulfilling responsibilities and meeting the college's needs. This position is considered "essential" to the college and not eligible for administrative closings.
While performing the duties of this position, is regularly required to sit, stand and walk as well as talk and hear. The employee must have the ability to lift, move and/or carry equipment and supplies up to 50 lbs. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close, distance and peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. Use of either hand for repetitive movements such as grasping, grasping and turning, and fine manipulation. Often required to walk across campus and ascend and descend stairs.

The fraudster will send a check to the victim who has accepted a job. The check can be for multiple reasons such as signing bonus, supplies, etc. The victim will be instructed to deposit the check and use the money for any of these reasons and then instructed to send the remaining funds to the fraudster. The check will bounce and the victim is left responsible.
