Summer Nova & Program Co-Leaders - 2018 - Unity College

Job Description:
This position is responsible for contributing to and leading high quality wilderness orientation & summer camp programs. Nova and Program activities include team-building, community living, group problem-solving, which may include hiking, backpacking, canoeing, kayaking, primitive skills, and other various opportunities. Staff are required to stay overnight during the five day program and manage a safe and harmonious residential community.
Essential functions for Nova Program
Assist with organizing pre-Nova trip logistics to include: food, equipment and trip routes.
Complete necessary pre- and post-trip work.
Co-Lead Nova trips for incoming students.
Co-facilitate Nova activities and discussions. Activities include but are not exclusive to canoeing, backpacking, service learning, initiatives, environmental education, Leave No Trace environmental ethics, and camp craft skill sessions.
Help promote the developmental goals of the Nova program.
Develop positive working relationships with other Nova staff.
Contribute to the College's commitment to sustainability.
Serve as a role model for the college's standards of conduct.
Demonstrate a high degree of commitment to customer service and quality education.
Essential functions for summer programs:
Supervise program participants during evening hours, meals, and in the residence halls, and serve as a positive role model while overseeing free time.
Deliver entertainment and activities during evening hours in coordination with the Student Activities Coordinator.
Deliver floor programs designed to address important community topics, set standards for participant behavior, and promote the formation of a healthy community during the program.
Assist with check in (Monday mornings) and check out (Friday evening) of guests for each program. Greet participants, distribute linens if necessary, and issue and collect keys.
Provide informal counseling to residents.
Refer participants to health & counseling services as needed and enlist emergency services when necessary.
Provide first aid when needed.
Assist Health and Wellness Director and provide meds during evening hours.
Submit work order requests to the on-duty residence life staff or seek assistance from Public Safety for emergency facility's needs.
Depending on the age of residents, check them into residence halls for bedtime and perform rounds to check for safety and be available to residents.
Live in the residence halls with participants and other guests (minors or adults) in order to supervise and provide a safe environment.
Requirements:
The ideal candidate will have a high school diploma or equivalent. Preference will be given to a current or past Unity College Student. Other qualifications include:
Demonstrated outdoor wilderness and leadership knowledge and experience.
Competence in a wide range of outdoor skills and challenge course facilitation.
Risk management skills to include understanding risk management and implementation appropriate to program.
Ability to backpack, camp, and canoe in wilderness setting.
Must be able to carry a 50 lb backpack over rough terrain.
Certifications / Trainings.
CPR for the professional rescuer or equivalent is required.
WFR (Wilderness First Responder) certification or higher is recommended. WFA (Wilderness First Aid is required.
Leave No Trace Trainer Training is required.
ACA Canoeing Level I and II required.
Swift Water Rescue or Advanced River Rescue.
Lifeguard or water rescue certification required (if working with a water-based trip)
Registered Maine Guide Recommended.
Valid driver's license and good driving record and certified Unity College van driver.
High level motivation with a team player philosophy.
Strong independent problem solving skills.
Excellent organization skills with the ability to track records.
Ability and willingness to work with incoming students from diverse political/socioeconomic backgrounds and a wide range of physical and academic abilities.
Attention to detail and ability to multi-task.
Additional Information:
This is a temporary, seasonal, pre-semester work schedule. Trips last five days and require staff to stay overnight. Must be flexible and cooperative in fulfilling responsibilities and in meeting the college's needs. (July 6 - August 24, 2018 Monday - Friday). Work is performed inside and outside. Occasional severe outside weather conditions and occasionally exposed to wet, cold, and/or humid conditions.

The fraudster will send a check to the victim who has accepted a job. The check can be for multiple reasons such as signing bonus, supplies, etc. The victim will be instructed to deposit the check and use the money for any of these reasons and then instructed to send the remaining funds to the fraudster. The check will bounce and the victim is left responsible.
